Ravenna

Ravenna is famous for its mosaics, a tradition which began with Roman floor decoration.

Also Roman in origin

the church of San Vitale is probably the most famous in Ravenna because the apse is completely covered with mosaic. I thought the columns were neat as well.

This is the exterior of San Vitale.

And across a smal courtyard is the mausoleum of Galla Placidia, which does not hold her body, but rather that of her father and two brothers for whom she had the mausoleum built. The inside is also completely decorated with mosaics.

Looking up the belltower of San Apollinare Nuova

Dante's tomb was being guarded by a broom and a squeegee.

Another belltower

In a small baptistry, this mosaic has a cross sitting on a throne(upside down at the top), somewhat of a first symbolically, as well as the River Jordan personified with crab claws on his head. Check out how Jesus is shown in the transparent water.
