Title: Printmaking

Size: 6" x 9"

Medium: Printmaking Linoleum block relief method (mixed media)

Objective: To create a relief print which uses linoleum for a plate.

Description: Students had to consider how lines could be used to create texture, space, and value while utilizing negative space, which was a result of carving into the surface. Individuals were responsible for proper use of gouges and blades in the carving. The subject matter for the assignment was anything living.

Successful students managed the many variables, which may affect the quality of a print. This includes the rolling out of the ink, cleaning their plate after printing with different colors and transferring the ink from the plate to the paper (burnishing).

Title: Outside Class Drawings

Size: 8.5" x 11"

Description: Each quarter, students are assigned three drawings to complete outside of class. The set of three shown include a backpack, a shirt, and a soda can.

Objective: The objective of the assignment is to draw as realistic as that student can. Students are supposed to pay attention to structure, value, and detail. These drawings help to show students growth throughout the year.

Title: Color Theory I

Size: 9" x 12"

Medium: Oil Pastel on Paper

Objective: As an extension of a unit on color theory and the color wheel, students were given an apple and were asked to use the pastels to draw as accurately as possible. Successful students drew the basic shape of the apple first (a circle or oval). They then applied a basic color to the surface, and proceeded to add in details (highlights, bruises, and shadows). A background was also added.

Title: Line

Size: 9" x 12" and 11" x 14"

Medium: Graphite and marker on paper

Objective: First, students were to use all straight or all curved lines in a composition to create a design. They were to experiment with line and attempt depth, value; try zigzag, horizontal, vertical, etc (e.g., 2 samples on the right).

Then, students were to use both straight and curved lines to create patterns and textures to fill in the implied contour lines of the object presented (e.g., sample below).

Title: Sculpture

Size: At least 2' in one direction with a maximum of 5'

Medium: Cardboard, masking tape, newspaper, wallpaper paste, white latex paint

Objective: Create a three-dimensional abstract sculpture with at least one void.

Title: Various works from Elementary School - Student Teaching

Size: Under 1' in all directions

Objective:

Students create the animal (cow) and make up a short story or poem about how the animal is special (2nd Grade).

The bowl of fruit was used to teach 1st Grade about the color wheel. Color theory is explained by the mixing of the different colors of fruit, which the students drew, cut out, and painted.

The turtle is something fun used to introduce kindergartners to shapes, coloring, and following instructions. Once the turtles were completed, a hole was punched in the top and then the students raced their turtles from one end of the room to another.

Title: Paper Relief

Objective: 8th grade students from Wisconsin Hills Middle School worked with contrasting colors to create a cut paper relief which uses the closure principle.

Objective: 7th grade students from Wisconsin Hills Middle School focus on details of subject matter as they draw the surface of objects in marker on paper.

Title: Wood Sculptures

Objective: 8th grade students from Wisconsin Hills Middle School integrate color theory, pattern, and assembly into 3-D art.

Title: Mixed Media Work

Objective: 7th grade students from Wisconsin Hills Middle School combined watercolor and colored pencil to focus on proportion, basic shapes, and color theory in a picture.

Title: Color Theory II

Size: 12" x 18"

Medium: Oil Pastel

Objective: To apply one color theory to a piece of artwork. Subject matter is cropped to emphasize basic shapes and concentrate on details of color.

Medium: Acrylic on Stretched canvas

Objective: Allow students to work in an abstract way by deconstructing an image and then reconstructing it through alteration of sizes, colors, or patterns.

Title: Theme Drawing

Size: 18" x 24"

Objective: Develop a theme or message within artwork through combining images into a collage then selecting a small area to create a drawing.

Objective: Experience drawing the human figure from life and become familiar with the many variables involved, such as proportion, movement of model, and perceptual constants.
