Introduction
Volunteers of America, one of the nation's oldest, largest, and
most comprehensive nonprofit human service organizations, helps
over one million Americans every year.
Volunteers of America's community-based service organizations
offer more than 160 different programs that help people including
children, youth, the elderly, families in crisis, the homeless,
people with disabilities or mental illness, and ex-offenders returning
to society.
In addition, Volunteers of America is the nation's largest nonprofit
provider of affordable housing for low-income families and the
elderly, and provides skilled long-term nursing care and other
health services.
Volunteers of America was founded in 1896 by Christian social
reformers Ballington and Maud Booth as a broad spiritual movement
to "reach and uplift" the American people. Today, we continue
their mission by helping people in need and by involving others
in service.
