In line with World Lecture Hall's first academic anniversary, our staff together with other institutions have worked very hard to achieve our goal- to gear towards academic excellence. Here is a preview of our present intellectual assets as of the 1st of July. Since we went online, our ranking has been increasing in survey reports especially in the field of academic performance. Our staff promises to work more quality time to meet the prescribed international academic standards.

This letter was send to me on Feb. 11. The letter is about the growing 'capitalization' and profit taking of some egoistic company, hope you might be interested of the current situation in the Philippines.

>>From friends in the Philippines. Read this especially those who think they won't survive >without a phone in the Philippines. Join the movement against this price increase. > >Additional info! > >So far there 3 telecoms companies who have submitted petitions to the >National Telecommunications Commission to revise their fee structure: > > 1. PLDT (estimated implementation by June 1997) > 2. Digitel > 3. Bayantel > >Monthly residential subscription increases to +-400, for commercial >phones it's +-800. Additional minutes cost 0.50 each. > >Rates are about the same for all three. Except that in the case of >Bayantel, a normal cycle during peak hours (7am-7pm) is one minute and >during non-peak hours Bayantel's cycle is 2 minutes each. > >The increase in the monthly subscription fee covers 500 "free" minutes >per month. > >These carriers rationalize their move as a response to the reduction in >toll rates by international carriers like AT&T, MCI. The FCC is moving >to approve the reduction of US carrier rates by as much as 30%++. This >will put a strain on international toll call revenues for Philippine >carriers since international calls subsidize local call operations. > >It is not far that the other local carriers will follow (Globe, >Philcom, Extelcom, Smart). > >There are serious implications for the mass market as well as to >business and industry. There are a lot of alternatives out there..... >the NTC should listen to the market in their process of deliberation of >the application for change in fees. > >...boyet

Scott is a mentally-disturbed and mentally demented individual. One day, he stripped naked in front of the class. It was as he said, an act of protest to the vulgarity in media nowadays.

At another time in chemistry class, he mixed elements together with the nonmetals and force everybody to drink from it to retain their youthfulness and be mentally alert especially during Chinese classes, where most of his classmates were sleeping...

Hi! Could you help us spread the word about this--

PLDT to charge 50 centavos per minute for local phone use!

-Aside from that, monthly rates will go up by P120.03 (P387.50) for residences, P180.02 (P756.80) for businesses!

-This is set to take effect in June 1997! PLDT is already oiling the wheels at National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to push through with this plan.

Source: Bulletin Today, Wed. Feb 5, 1997, p. B-1

-This means a 1 hour call will cost P30 pesos! 3 hours of use in a day will cost P90 pesos!

-If the average user uses the phone 1 hour a day, equivalent to 30 hours a month. He/she would have to pay PLDT P780 more a month!

-A family with a telebabad teenager who uses the phone on average of 2.5 hours a day, will cost a family P2,397.50 a month!

-Short-distance calls between Manila and Cavite has also gone up from 3 pesos per three minutes to 12 pesos per three minutes!

-Calls between Manila and Baguio will go up from P11.80 to P15!

-This will raise inflationary pressures! As the cost of calls go up, so does the cost of doing business, and so will the price of goods and services.

-The Public can't afford this! Earnings will not meet PLDT's big increase.

-Businesses can't afford this! More and more, companies require telecommunications to transact business. Putting a toll on these activities will curtail business activities and depress the economy.

-This will kill Filipino entry into the Internet. While Filipino developers try to bring the rewards of selling globally over the internet to local business, PLDT's move will cripple these efforts. This will kill ISPs!

-This will worsen the traffic situation & pollution. If long discussions will cost more if done over the phone, then more people will be forced to commute. With the ongoing construction of the LRT, this is the worst time to discourage phone use. More travelling means more traffic and pollution.

Solutions: Protest to your congressman, to PLDT, to the NTC, to your friends, relatives, clubs, associations, companies! Distribute this to everyone you know! Let's ask for a reasonable amount like P.05 a minute (which still means Billions of pesos profit for PLDT). For 30 hours a month (w/ first 8 hours covered by monthly fee), that's P66. For just 5 million users, that's P330,000,000 (three hundred thirty million) a month for PLDT (and that's not counting their profits from long-distance calls!). Currently they're already earning billions a year.

PLDT has not considered the Filipino people or what's good for the country in coming up with these pricing schemes. All they have considered is the money, the profits. It's time to let them know that they live in a society, they do not live in a vacuum, and that their actions affects other peoples' lives.

Thanks, U.P. Psychology Society
