All About Me...

My name is Jami Ruth Shields.

I was born in Enid, Oklahoma, and had lived there all my life except for the 4 years at college. I attend New Hope United Methodist Church when I am home visiting the parents. But- I have now recently moved to Guymon,Oklahoma where I live and teach. I just recently moved here from Liberal, Kansas where I lived and taught for 2 years.

I attended college at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where I completed my Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education degrees in May of 1996! Also, I have almost finished a minor in Journalism. (I think I lack about 2 or so classes.)

I have attended outreach Graduate/ Master's Level Classes from Newman University, and have completed 15 hours of work to become certified in English as a Second Language. This was important to me as I have been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) throughout all of the years I have taught. This is ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade ESL pullout to a self-contained T-1 ESL class. I will be completing my Master's of Science in Education with an emphasis in ESL the summer of 2001.

In the 1997-1999 school years, I worked at Washington Elementary School a part of USD 480 where I taught K-5 ESL and Migrant classes. I enjoyed it, and found it wonderful to be able see the changes and growth that my students achieved every day. But as things happen--- I was meant to move on to better things. :o)

I am now teaching for the Guymon Public Schools at Salyer Elementary. I am really loving this because I have my own classroom and my own every changing class of students. My school is really unique as we are the only school in the district teaching using Success For All (SFA).It is so Awesome to see the growth in Reading and the other improvement. If you are interested we always welcome visitors!

In 2000, my Principal gave me the application for the Rotary Group Study Exchange Program. After going through the application and interview process, I was accepted to become a part of the District 5690/4110 GSE Team for 2000. This is a 5 member team that will spend 5 or so weeks on an exchange trip in Mexico. Here is a link to a the page that some of us worked on while in Mexico and I finished up when we got home. It is a Non-Rotary sponsored page.
