This is where we list news, rumors,
& gossip about various
clubs and bars. As well, this is the page for us to vent
our complaints, or display our compliments.
6/24/99 - Hmm, where do we begin. Well,
let's start with one of the most disappointing
adventures for a Westside drinker. It's the recently opened club called
"Sugar" on the corner of Lincoln & Broadway in Santa Monica (review
coming soon). The space itself, the old Kingston 12 reggae club, is very
cool, especially for the Westside. The music was thumping, the fog was
rolling, the girl/guy ratio was great, and then we ordered our drinks.
Follow this scenerio:
Us: "Can we get three Jack & Cokes, please?"
Good Looking Bartender: "No"
Us: "Ummm, excuse me?"
G.L.B.: "No hard liquor. Beer and wine, only."
Us: "Check, please!"
What's that shit all about? If you're gonna spend the money to renovate
a space into a very cool environment, and you're gonna hire some really good
DJ's, the least you could do is get the proper liquor license. I lost count
as to how many people I overheard at the bar recoiling back from the
"no hard liquor" retort from the bartenders. They did give us some
bullshit response that they're still trying to get a full license. Of course,
with the sizable English contingent (read: where's me Guiness?), I don't
think they'll ever feel like they need to pursue that hard. Such a shame.
The Westside almost had a decent house club to go to. Of course, if I ever
have to go back, I'll have to be of altered minds to take advantage of it.
