The Unofficial Escaflowne Mailing List

This is the Unofficial Escaflowne ML. This is for the discussion of the manga, anime series and movie "Tenkuu no Escaflowne" (The Vision of Escaflowne). The topics may also cover Yoko Kanno, Hajime Mizoguchi, Shoji Kawamori and perhaps even Maaya Sakamoto and Tomokazu Seki (provided it includes their involvement in Escaflowne).

Why was this one started?
The Escaflowne ML (the one on escaflowne-ml@unixg.ubc.ca one or something, or its system) apparently died (as in kaput, the members were no longer able to send or receive messages from the said ML), so someone decided to start up this one. (As it turns out, the 2 other Escaflowne MLs listed on the Anipike are also quite dead.)

Who can join the EscaML?
Anyone who likes Escaflowne AND is willing to follow the ML rules may join the EscaML.

EscaML Rules
[Here's the Mailing List FAQ page, by the way]

  • Be informed. Before you ask any questions, do yourself (and the ML) a favor (by helping to avoid those questions that have been asked at least twice already in recent time) by going through The Escaflowne Compendium or any other informative Escaflowne page at least once. The Escaflowne Compendium is required reading for Escaflowne fans, especially for those who want to subscribe to the EscaML. The EscaML rules are also required reading for those who want to subscribe to the EscaML.

  • Be nice. This means no flames. Be courteous, we're all here because we like Escaflowne, it can't be that hard to get along.
Avoid crude remarks that will offend anyone else in the list (This is sometimes also known as FLAMES). This is stuff where you flat out call someone stupid or swear at them over the mailing list. This kind of behaviour will also result in an automatic boot from the list. Same goes if you are retaliating to the person who started it. It's not going to be tolerated. If you have an opinion that's fine, present it intelligently, don't let yourself sound like an immature brat (even if you are one). If you have an argument (such as arguments regarding subs vs. dubs, LD vs. DVD, fansubs, etc) that is likely to offend others or generate lots of off-topic posts, forget it. Don't even post it. There are newsgroups for those sorts debates.
Please keep conversation decent so that you don't offend any of the other members, and if you are offended by something a person may have said and you think it may become a reoccuring problem over the list please inform the list in a mature and calm manner, as well as the list administrators, A.S.A.P.

  • No dub ranting. No, this does not mean that all dub posts are banned. Discussions on plot differences between the sub vs the dub or who voice actors are acceptable and are encouraged. Things that generate discussions are good. What's not acceptable is what is referred to as dub ranting. Posts like, "I can't believe what they've done with [insert your favorite character here]'s voice, they sound so horrible!!!!!!!!!!" will not be tolerated. If you post messages like that, you will be automatically booted. The whole topic of sub vs dub is always a personal topic which generates a lot of negative feelings. You are encouraged to support whatever form of Escaflowne you prefer, just don't try to change other's opinion on the matter, it normally leads to flames.

  • Keep it legal. The increase in the amount of bootlegged material and/or the requests for it has become a cause for concern. Such matters (advertising or requesting such fansubs, mp3s, or other audio and video files) are NOT allowed on the EscaML. The EscaML is NOT the place to ask for Escaflowne fansubs (which are illegal now), Escaflowne has already been picked up for distribution in English by AnimeVillage. (The rights for Escaflowne in other languages may be held by other copyright holders.)
MP3s or MPEGs of copyrighted material, likewise, are illegal. Sure, we're getting our fix of Escaflowne if we download the entire soundtrack or a complete episode off the web -- but we're hurting the people that put so much effort into creating the series we love. As such, please refrain from posting requests for, or announcements of, such things on the ML.

  • No attachments (binaries). Don't send pictures, midi files, wav files and such to the ML (and when these are sent through e-mail, they fall under the term "attachments"). Just because you have a T1 connection and 10 free gigs in your hard drive doesn't mean the rest of us do too.
If you have an image you would like people to see, either ask people on the list who would like to see it and send it to them in private e-mail, *OR* give us a URL to the place you have it or saw it.
The only type of attachments permitted are txt. (text) files. NO HTML FILES PLEASE!
NOTE: For those who don't understand what we mean by "Attachment", it's when you have to press the "Attach" or "Send File" button to open up a file to send on your e-mail program to someone else's e-mail.

  • No spam. I'm not talking about the Bunch of Chemicals Who Want to Be Called Lunch Meat here, I'm talking about virus warnings, chain letters, "If you're my friend e-mail this ascii image thingamabobber back to me and to all of your friends" letters, that sort of thing. The EscaML is NOT the place to send it to.
We don't care how long the kid has to live and how many pennies he'll get for each person it's sent to, We'll boot you automatically if we have to read it. It's not an unreasonable request. If you are really concerned, take it to people you know on private e-mail. If you don't know what SPAM is, it's stuff that is not only not related to Escaflowne, but it has nothing to do with anime in any respect. It's also known as useless drivel.

  • No one-line posts unless it contains an important piece of information. If you send out one-liner e-mails such as a simple "Thanks!" if someone helped you out, send that out through private e-mail. Acceptable one-liners say fairly important stuff like "The ISBN for the Escaflowne Fanbook is .....".

  • Remember your spoiler warnings. Not everyone on the ML has seen all of Escaflowne or wants to be spoiled about some other series, and not all the unspoiled people want to be spoiled about the story. A spoiler is a spoiler. No matter where the spoiler's from (be it from Weiß Kreuz, Cowboy Bebop or whatever), be sure to mark the post with [SPOILER] in the subject line and at the very start of the post. (What is a spoiler? A major plot twist, a revelation of sorts that occurs/is given out sometime in the middle/near the end/the end of a story.)

  • Stay on-topic. This is the EscaflowneML. We're here to discuss Escaflowne and other related topics (see first paragraph on this page), not to sift through OT posts. However, since OT posts are unavoidable, you could at least have the decency of having the off-topic tag ([OT]) in the post. OT threads will also be killed off after a day of circulation, since people have a tendency to beat dead horses. Don't wait for an [adminnish] post to remind you that the OT thread is a day old and that you should stop replying to it on the ML (you could reply to the OT posts privately, but not to the ML).

  • Keep subject lines on-topic. Stale subject lines are bad. If a thread is labeled "Allen's hair" and the discussions under that thread have veered off to discussions about Dryden's hair, please change the subject line to make it say "Dryden's hair (was: Allen's hair)".
We already have an automatic label that says [escaflowne], but this is for other things like:
    • [Noise]- Anything not serious topic stuff anymore. If it starts only going on between two people then take it to private e-mail.
    • [Off Topic] or [OT]- Stuff that has nothing to do with Escaflowne but is on the topic of anime, and may also be important to the list (although you should really try to avoid it, as it tends to happen too often).
    • [Fic]- Fanfiction for Escaflowne that you would like the members of the list to read. There is also an Archive for Escaflowne Fanfiction, so if you want your fiction to be put up on that site, please inform the list in your fanfiction Author Notes.
    • [Spoilers]- (An extension of the Spoiler Space rule stated above) A must! Some people don't like being spoiled about events in Escaflowne! Although the Escaflowne anime has ended, some people have still not seen all of it. It is also imperative that you do not spoil the movie for the other members of this ML who want to see it without being spoiled.
Another way to help prevent spoiling members of the ML is to include SPOILER SPACE. This is usually about 10 lines of blank space where the reader has to scroll down in order to read the spoiler. It's rather useful, please use it.

  • Try to stick with plain text e-mail. E-mail sent in html format is a pain for those who have systems who can't handle html. Be considerate of them.

  • Make sure your quoted material is less than your post. Meaning, if you will reply to a post, snip out the parts of that post that are not relevant to the reply you're typing up. If you just typed up five lines and then there's 20 lines of quoted text left in the post, do some trimming. We have an archive of all posts sent to the list anyway. Do NOT just hit "Reply," type out your reply on top of the quoted material and hit "Send." That's rude.

  • Mark the quoted material properly. When replying, please try to have the lines of quoted material be indicated by ">". For example:
         You wrote:
         >I finally saw the whole series now! I can't believe that
         >there's only 26 episodes.

Due to budget constraints, Escaflowne ended up being only
26 episodes long instead of the intended 39 episodes.

  • This is the EscaML, NOT the FYML, TechSupportML, sub vs. dub ML, DVD vs. LD ML, fansubs ML, anime activism ML or anything else other than the EscaML. Some threads, even when they start off being related to Escaflowne, veer off-topic way too fast, so please avoid them. (Hint, hint, hint.)

  • Shrink your sig file. Please limit signature files to a maximum of six lines in length.

  • Be decent. There are kids on the ML. Please try not to use foul language. If you do, punctuate them out (for example: "#$+&% it!"). If you will be posting a yaoi/lemon/hentai fanfic/fanart piece, please do not send the fic to the ML. Simply announce it (make it clear first that it is not for people under 18 years of age, do not explain what it is, just say if it's yaoi, lemon or hentai, don't even explain what yaoi, lemon or hentai means so you won't end up giving kids the wrong idea) to the ML and ask people to e-mail you privately for it or for a link to it.

  • Be respectful. Respect your fellow EscaMLers, not to mention the EscaML list managers. Always read e-mail from the ML managers that have [adminnish] or any other similar administratorly tags in it. Currently, there are five co-managers of the EscaML: Kourin (aka Folken No Miko), Chaos-chan, Chris McDougall, Jeremy Bunyard and Emily (aka EmikoSama. There is also the pet Netiquette Nazi who will be out in full force whenever ML rules are being broken. They can all be reached through one e-mail address: escaml@hotmail.com
If you have done something against the rules of the EscaML or against the EscaML in general, you may receive private e-mail reminders from one (or two, or more) list manager to point out what you've done so that you can avoid making the same mistake in the future. If you still make the same mistakes after being warned at least once or goof up about something that the administrators just reminded the ML about, you will either be removed from the list or have your posting privileges revoked (You will still be subscribed to the ML, but you cannot post anything). The warning e-mail may be skipped altogether if the rule you broke was a major one.

  • Use your brain! This rule should be self-explanatory.

  • Have fun. Remember, Escaflowne, great as it may be, is just a show.

Make sure you've read the EscaML rules before subscribing. By subscribing to the ML, you guarantee that you have read the rules and therefore understand that breaking the rules will result in admin action as appropriate (either through a warning e-mail, getting posting privileges revoked, or being unsubbed from the list).

Kourin would also like to thank the FYML. All she needed to know about running MLs, she learned from being in the FYML. Special thanks also go to Van Donovan of The Vision of Escaflowne -- Thought of the Jeture production for help in finalizing this page.
