The Poems of Sapphoby John Myers O'Hara[1910] |
This is an early 20th century attempt to weave the fragments of Sappho into a set of complete poems. The translator is building on the consensus view of Sappho at the time, very heavily influenced by such speculations as Bilitis. The poetry is serviceable, and O'Hara is careful not to overstep his mission. This book is not very well known, and because it was printed in a small run and never reprinted, is fairly scarce and hence used copies are expensive. --J.B. Hare, June 11th, 2008.
